With or Without

So we bring the semester to and end so soon. I am so excited what I learn and take this and apply it to my furture projects. I can honestly say I havent done anything projects for short term goals, but for long term goals. Being a freelancer Designer, Videographer, Photographer etc. it’s especially to know these things especially about sound. Originally i was going to continue from my silent movie I did. Timeout due to timing i decided to change it up. I wanted to keep the same Idea and concept. Thats how i came into the idea to recreate sound for buster keaton

From the beginning of the semester we learn about, How to properly use recorders and we had a chance to use a variety  such as Tascam DR- 40Zoom H2n Handy Recorder ( just to name a few. The overall purpose of using and testing these recorders, were to get a more indepth understanding of how sound works. How to check the levels, making sure you do the Checklist.  These are great habits to follow especially as a sound engineer, or to asure quality recorder for, videos, interview etc..

Sound is a science and can be a work of art. I learned in this sound class about Sound Design. Which helps implement the quality in sound wether for television, movies or interviews. Sound designers create sound from scratch, there goal is to create the most realistic sound to match the display. I admire this video how creative Peter Jackson ( Director of Lord of The Rings) was  for the specific sound he was looking for when creating this move. His design team spent hours to get the correct sound.

So for the past couple of weeks Professor Smith challenge us to come up to with a sound design for a cartoon ” Plane crazy mickey” Now  my first thought was ok im going to match up the music with the cartoon etc.. However, it’s not that simple meaning  you have to know what type of  style Musicial, Orchestra,  Action just to name a few.

My past projects I attempt Section 13 I choose which was from a group assignment. Below is my new assignment. I chose to redo Buster Keton ( you dont have to watch the whole video, but view some to give you a better understand who he is. I choose to do House falls on  buster

What i did was totallly replace the sound using the program Premiere and just creating tons of layers. My list is below

Some sound was not in sync which I tried and mashing up on purpose.  Mixing two different generes of sound design. Some cases it worked and some like: The running scene, the skidding and the house falling. I tried to mix the natural sound with the music. I gave it my very best of what I know to make it happen.

I orchestrated this list as i kept watching it to basically set a foundation of sounds ( Natural and Metophoric sounds) i would need to execute this project. I not only created one type of style but two. One with music and one without. Hope you enjoy.

With Music

Mickey Mouse Crazy Plane Sec 13

We were challenged to do a segment with no music. I really focused on trying to make the sounds for the airplane as well as make it sound pop a little. Again using sound bible along with downloading youtube clicks using Pwnyoutube.com. The new sound I added The car drives by, i intense the sound of the air plane by adding two additional sounds, i also included the whistle sound. To go along with the little drop the air did.

I choose to revise section 13  of Plane crazy Mickey. The previous audio I created was with the them music from matilda which was The End of Trunchbull. We incoperated that soundtrack with sounds. We were challenged to create it with no music this time. I wanted to be as precise as possible. Using Soundbible.com and YouTube helped me to create this.

List of Sounds used in Section 13

Wind ( which is play throughout the entire 14 secs)

Metal Rattling (I used for the airplane sound. Being that the airplane seemed like it was smoking and rattling)

Screaming (used when the plane was falling)

Airplane ( used when the airplane came closed toward the camera. I used this particular sound to give and illusion of a plane coming close. I increased the sound)

Slipping sound ( used when she was pulling on Mickey’s shirt)

Boing sound ( used will Minnie was bouncing up and down in the plane.

Metaphoric sounds I used were the slipping and Doing sound. I used that to emphasis the moment.

The natural sounds I used wind, metal,Airplane and  Screaming.

Crazy Plane Mickey Scene 13

Our assignment was to recreate sound and sound track for Crazy Plane I choose to do  Section 13. 3:59-4:11  (The plane finally pulls upward but falls wildly in the air)

I used soundbible and downloaded seven different sounds that, I thought was suitable for the snippet. In the 14 seconds scene, i incorperated different sound effects such as metal rattling, screaming, airplane, wind, boing, frying and pan. The sound track i used was from matilda called End of Trunchbull. I was selected in reference to which part i was going to use. The song starts out very quit and subtle and then it picks up the speed and intensity of the music, so in designing this project I did just put the music that was asked i sync the music based on the scene ( which is very important)  Syncing the project was fun for me seeing everything fitting in. Actual seeing and hearing the sounds at the same time was a thrill.

Timeout Final proposal

In sound class we learn how to do sound design, giving the visual more dynamics and help making the story clearer. Directing and Production done by me Lakeya J and special thanks to Actress Sarita Smiley. In this silent film the key was to get you to here the sounds that i took time out to fine tune? the increase sound of the footsteps, the keys , the light switch turning on and the alarm clock!

Three Min Silent Movie short film (Timeout) Final proposal

Timeout!

(Three minute silent film)

I want to make a three-minute movie. Using all the different techniques we learn in sound class. I’m going to create a story line  for the  slient movie, which was inspired by  Buster Keaton. I may do it in black and white which is undecisive. Basic detail Im going to incorporate a sound design based on what we are  studying. My favorite  sound design project was by Lord of the rings 2. Director Peter Jackson. Im going to do the movie first then create the sound for it  just like they, piece by piece  and then mix it in protools. My attempt is to make it as realistic as possible.

Scene# 1 will be a lady in bed and the alarm clock goes off (fades out), she runs  down the steps and runs outside (you will hear birds chirping) she looks at her watch and see she is running out of time and misses the bus the bus pulls off (sounds in this scene will be Alarm clock, her running down the steps and the bus passing by.)

Scene #2  the lady bumps into her boss rushing with paper work and a brief case ( sound of papers falling), the boss points to the clock ( you will hear the sound of the clock ticking) she goes to her desk bangs the paper work on her desk and start typing at the desk and answering phone calls. Later she looks up to the clock and see it’s almost time to get off work ( you hear the clock ticking)

Scene # 3 the lady walks up the steps and put the keys in the door drops bag and plops on the couch and looks at the clock. The end

This didn’t plan did not work due to timing. As first suggested to revise the scenes and time was not on my side, so I decided to use Buster Keaton and short clip from youtube A house falls on Buster Keaton (There were no sources which moving this came from).

My Concentration is Graphic Design; I also have knowledge of print, video and web. This is my passion this sums up my whole career. Getting this position would be awesome, and a privilege. I have experience doing freelancing and designing with customers. But I know this opportunity would put me on another platform for designing. I know I will be challenge, which I love when it comes to designing.

Choosing these firms and companies I viewed each site a look at their cliental listing. All of them had worked for major clienteles, like Kmart, Best Western, Denny, Citi, American Airlines just to name a few!

Evaluate Me!

Through the course of this semester I build up enough knowledge about Sound that I never really understood. Learning the techniques and the physical properties of sound and researching it, has given me the confidence to do better recordings in the future.

Some of the physical  properties of sound consist of Transduction; Which accepts energy in on form and gives it back in another form. This is how a microphone works, when a person speaks into a microphone the sounds that are coming out of their mouth is energy ( mixture of gases, molecules etc.) and are turned to another for of energy and produce the sound. Sound is a science by itself. Another physical property would be Frequency; audible frequency is characterized as a periodic vibration whose frequency is audible to the average human. It is the property of sound that most determines pitch and is measured in hertz (Hz).  Our ear hear the range of 20Hz to 20KHz. Wavelength; this is the wave forms, each wavelength develops a different pitch.

The impact that sound has on storytelling, it is the process of developing a sound design, which is normally used in movies, theatre, television and live music ( and so forth). This technique is to create a illusion and allow you to hear effectively what is happening or taking place.  Sound impact on storytelling  subtle piece or justhe right ambience at a certain point that contributes to storytelling.

This video Display the overall concept of story telling without visuals. But listening to this video, allows you to image the scene.

Steps to approving quality sound when recording:

The Checklist RECORDER you choose in reference to the input gain ( which is when signal enters a mixer) – Manual Vs. Auto, (Left vs. Right) gain dials, MIC GAIN (L, M, H), Limiter/auto switch. File Format – file type WAV or MP3 (uncompressed or compressed), sample rate (44.1, 48, 96, 128), bit depth (8, 16, 24, 32) Internal vs. External mics Phantom Power (+48V) on/off Left vs. Right, Stereo vs. mono, […] These 7 steps are the key step to recording a quality recording as well as knowing the technicalities of each term!

For quality mixing you want to get and understanding how to import music files. Knowing the sample rate and the bit rate you want to mixer in. Being sure how and when to sync up the sound clips. Knowing the different effects in the program your using some of the top programs used to record audio Protools,Audition, Fruity loops studios ( just to name a few there are tons) and Online  Audacity, Filelab, Acoustica and again just to name a few! This will help you develop quality audio mixing!

ReWalk!

After the discussing on last Thursday in class, I took out the time to enhance the sound to the best of my ability. Using the site FileLab which I used to edit each file individually, as  if i was using a mixing board. Then I linked them together using Acoustica Edition, then I export it back into file lab to crop the file, o be a shorter sample. Some of the effects I used the Amplify tool, which decreases and increases the sound. Heres a tutorial and sample of how the tool works and how to use it.

I used the Amplify tool for the birds to give the effect like im passing by and then the sound decreases. In addition to that effect to make it more realistic I also used the Time Stretch tool  which decrease and increases the tempo. I also used these effects with the truck, to make it seem as though the frenquency level has dropped and been strecth. Here’s a sample of how the tool work and to use it.

Reflection

In class after listening to the clip with the ambulance passing by. I had a greater understanding of frequency and the meaning of it. The alarm sound on the ambulance has an directional horn sound on top, so when its coming toward you can hear it louder as it approaches you. But as it passes the frequency level drops and make a low echo like sound, which is similar to the Time Stretch tool ( if used properly). So my attempt was to produce the same quality effect with the online editor site. Giving the illusion of a sound thats not really there, like a sound designer.

New and Revised The Walk

The Walk

This time around I recorded myself walking. I memorize the sounds I hear around me as i was walking. Watching the sound design projects, it gave me a greater understand and a new perspective of sound. My sound clip as you listen tell a story, where you can hear whats going on in my atmosphere. Watching the that was video post on the class website  Amazing Short Film on Old Time Radio, Gave me my idea to not just record the environment, but tell a short story. Whatever, you do should be clear what is going on in the story. As you listen to my recording  the chirping of the birds give you an idea it’s sunny outside, you hear that i’m walking and you hear the truck backing up. These are actual things I saw when I was walking. I enhance the sound using a free sound effects online website called Soundbible.com. I added the birds chirping, walking on concrete and the truck backing up thats from Soundbible,
